Jumpstart your Japanese with these Windows Phone Apps

So you want to learn Nihongo? Fortunately there are apps on Windows Phone that can teach you the basics, even advanced, of Japanese. And what's good is that almost all of them are free. Let's get started! (Note: Clicking on the name of the app will bring you to Windows Phone Store) 



1. Japan Talk 365 (Free)

This app is very handy if you want to learn basic Japanese words and phrases. Find it hard to say? Fortunately, it has a voice assistant that can help you in pronunciation  You can also learn  how to write hiragana and katakana with this app. 






2. Japanese Hub (free, with in-app purchases)

Size: 17.82 - 23.3 MB


This is one of my favorite apps for learning Japanese on Windows Phone. Just like Japan Talk 365, Japanese hub teaches you Nihongo basics (words and phrases) but what I like with this app is that it teaches you how to write Hiragana and Katakana (and even Kanji) with the right strokes. Add to that are those funny ways to memorize the kana symbol. There's also a live tile which display Japanese words and phrases along with its kana form.

But that's not all with this app, it has lessons, a Kanji dictionary, and quizzes. For some advanced lessons, you have to pay though. But overall this is a nice app to start with.




 
3. Tango Master (free)

Size: 13.14 - 15.67 MB

Just like Japanese Hub, Tango Master is an all-in-one Japanese learning app but for free! It has Kana, Kanji and vocabulary flash cards along with lessons and quizzes to test what you have learned. There's also a full offline dictionary with 150,000 words!

Added bonus with this app are the games (shiritori, rapid fire, memory) as well as a web reader. As with others, this app has a live tile.





4. Obenkyo (free)

A straightforward Japanese learning app, it also teaches the basics (kana, kanji, numbers) presented in an outline, along with flashcards and quizzes It also comes with the acclaimed Tae Kim's Japanese Grammar Guide!

A perfect tool to aid your Japanese learning, this offline dictionary app has almost all the words you can think off,. Just type the English word or the romaji and this app will show equivalent Japanese words written both in kanji and kana, along with example sentences.   






6. Daily Kanji (free)
Publisher: Dan Crevier
Size: 2.41MB

A kanji each day in its Live Tile! This app helps you familiarize yourself with different Kanji characters along with its stroke order.

This quiz app is perfect if you are memorizing all Kana characters. It also shows your accuracy on each characters.
